As part of the 2007 cultural capital of europe project TRANS(IENT)CITY the artists Bik van der Pol and Apolonija Susteric created „Sunset Cinema“. To have it in their own words:
“The cinema configuration consists of three elements. Podium/tribune, screen and box with logistics are the minimum requirements. Together they make SUNSET CINEMA but they can also function separately. The podium is formed by the projection building by taking the light beam as a steering principle. The foot thus becomes a sort of slope, and this serves as the basis for the seatings. The screen is formed by the wall onto which the projection is directed. The wall is an existing brick wall, part of a building, and it marks one of the borders of the square. Between the projection building and the screen a space is left open, through which not only the public inside the projection building can see the entire screen, also the people outside the building can follow the screening without necessarily being inside. The box with logistics offers space for toilet, bar, storage, video rental.
To envision a real, functioning cinema here for a period of circa 9 months, however, a realistic approach is required. It has to be warm when it is cold, cool when it is hot, and dry when it is wet outside. Besides that, it needs some basic services: storage, toilet, water supply. So we developed a cinema that is made for and thinking from the site.”
Filmreakter is taking charge of the program, which will include everything in young film Luxembourg has to offer, from teenage homemade horror movies to internationally acclaimed 35mm shortfilms aswell as guest programs of film collectives from all over the world.
The cinema will be operating from September through December and like all good things in life it will be free of charge.
